Community Programs

Ladysmith & District Credit Union is a leader in supporting local community programs. We are especially proud of the following programs:

  • Ladysmith Ambassador Program

A non-profit organization that works to foster self-esteem, leadership, public speaking, and community spirit in young men and women within our community. The program provides an opportunity for healthy development of our youth through a formal eight week Toastmasters course, formal speech and talent night, along with many volunteer activities and public appearances. The skills and life-changing activities offered through this program provide a solid and positive foundation for youth as they enter adulthood.

  • Ladysmith & District Credit Union Bursary Program

The Ladysmith & District Credit Union, (LDCU), recognizes the effort and work involved for all our LSS graduates, and we also understand the rising costs of post-secondary education. Each year, LDCU presents five scholarships and bursaries to graduating students at LSS. These bursaries include a $6,000 scholarship in memory of John Ulinder, one of the founding members of the Credit Union who attended every AGM for 50 years. Also included are two bursaries in the amount of $3,500, one in memory of Helmi Kotilla, the first female President of a Board of any Credit Union in BC, and the other in memory of Jack MacDonald, a long-time director and President of the Board. Finally, the last two bursaries are separated into those students pursuing vocational or academic pursuits and are in the amount of $1,250 each.

  • Ladysmith Days

On the August long weekend each year, LDCU sponsors a child-friendly event at Transfer Beach. This event is named the Kids 'Count Fun Zone after the Credit Union's school savings program. There are bounce castles, face-painting, balloon makings, and fun for all ages. At the end of the day is another spectacular fireworks show sponsored by LDCU. This show takes place in Ladysmith Harbour, just off the Ladysmith Credit Union Point.

  • Light-Up Night

Every year on the last day of November, the Town of Ladysmith celebrates Light-Up Night. This annual celebration attracts thousands of spectators and includes many festive events, including a parade, and culminating with an outstanding fireworks show. LDCU is proud to have sponsored this spectacular fireworks show since 2006. It has always been an honour to kick-start the Christmas season with a family-fun event that brings joy to everyone who attends.

  • Ladysmith Grand Christmas

An annual event with a shop local theme. People shopping at local participating stores are given an entry every time they make a purchase. There are weekly giveaways and cash prizes, all for shopping local. LDCU is the main sponsor of this shop local program.

  • Ladysmith Old Tyme Christmas

Ladysmith transforms itself into a Christmas village, straight out of a Charles Dickens novel. Come and see everyone celebrating all the Victorian traditions that made Christmas a time of peace and joy. The Credit Union parking lot is changed into a giant s'mores party. Bring your children, or your inner child, and feast on homemade s'mores while Christmas music takes you back to simpler times.
